Wellness screening interview

With our doctor you will discuss details relevant to your current and ongoing health. The doctor will ask you about a range of symptoms relevant to your health status, relating to:

• general lifestyle
• cardiovascular system
• respiratory system
• urinary system
• nervous system
• digestive system
• bones, joints and muscles
• drugs or medications that you take
• allergies which you may have
• diseases which may be present in your family.
• sexual health (optional)
• mental health (optional)

If there are any matters you do not wish to discuss (or to have written down), just tell the doctor… and of course, you will be treated with complete confidentiality.

A detailed clinical examination

The doctor will check your pulse and your blood pressure, listen to your heart and lungs, examine your abdomen, your nervous system (including checking the back of your eyes), and check your skin, your muscles your bones and joints. If you wish, the doctor can also examine your breasts or your testicles, and show you how to examine them yourself.

Then the doctor will check the electrical activity of your heart with an electrocardiogram, assess the peak flow from your lungs and analyse your urine sample.

A comprehensive series of tests

The doctor will collect a sample of your blood there and then… no waiting around for somebody else to do it… and send it off for a series of tests. If you don’t like needles, don’t worry. The doctor will be take time and care over taking you blood - you should barely feel it.

Your blood will be sent off to our lab for tests including:

• The functioning of your kidneys and your liver
• The health of your blood itself
• Ongoing inflammation processes in your body
• The functioning of your thyroid gland
• Your blood sugar - an important indicator of diabetes
• The fats in your body, including good and bad cholesterol
• The way your body handles iron
• The status of your prostate gland (if you are a man and over 40)

Remember, we will NEVER do a test that you haven’t consented to

If you are a woman, we will also send off a sample of your urine to test for Chlamydia Trachomatis, an infection which women often don’t know they have, which can be treated easily if caught early enough, and which can cause a number of problems for the reproductive system if left untreated.

If you are over 40, we will also send a sample of your stool for faecal occult blood: an important screening test for bowel diseases including bowel cancer.

We have a variety of other screening programmes and, if you have a particular need (for example, if you are an athlete and want an independent doping screen), we can add them on to our wellness screening package saving your valuable time.

Your follow up appointment

Before we see you again, our doctor will analyse the results of your tests. You will then sit down together and talk through the results, with any findings explained clearly. Together, you can then put together a programme to keep you well, that fits in with the various demands of your life. If anything is flagged up by the screening programme, our doctor will help to find the best treatment for you.
